WARNING: Major spoilers ahead from Firefly Lane season 2 part 2!
In Firefly Lane season 2 episode 13, teenage Kate’s budding relationship with Coop has to be put on the backburner due to her duties at work with Lisa-Karen. Kate feels obligated to turn down a date with Coop in order to help her friend close the restaurant. Since Kate and Lisa-Karen only recently got back on solid, Kate doesn’t want to take advantage of her.
Lisa-Karen overhears Coop asking Kate out on a “private” date, but she turns him down to clean out the grease traps and take out the trash. However, Lisa-Karen tells Kate she will cover for her so she can enjoy what could be a transformative date. Coop takes Kate to “makeout point” during a thunderstorm and they do just that in his car.
Back at the restaurant, Lisa-Karen takes out the trash to the dumpster outside. As she lifts up the metal lid to toss in the trash bag, a bolt of lightning rips through the sky above. It’s later confirmed that Lisa-Karen was struck by lightning and died. Kate blames herself for her friend’s death, since she believes she would have been the one dead if she hadn’t left work before closing.
During all seven episodes of Firefly Lane season 2 part 2, Kate battles a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Although the cancer appeared to have been treated, it returns before her wedding to Johnny and they discover it has spread to her brain. She’s unable to enter the trial treatment Danny got her into, and she dies peacefully in the series finale.
Kate dies after she and Tully share a peaceful moment together on her patio, looking out to the water. Tully tells her best friend about her recent romance with Danny and goes back inside to get more tea. While she’s in the house, Kate takes notice of her surroundings as she slips away. From behind her head slumps down. Tully rejoins Kate, but she immediately knows she’s gone.
